Shooting & Falconry
The Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla is the ideal gun dog, being an HPR he has many qualities Hunting, Pointing and Retriving
unfortunately over the years HPRs have recieved bad press in the shooting world and are now not very popular within the
shooting community i myself run labs for 20 years but since the introduction of this breed to Britain the goal post have now
moved for HPRs wether shooting Pigeons on spring drillings, on the peg at a Pheasant shoot or dogging out Rabbits this breed
caters for all types. The breed really comes into its own when walking up game or rabbits, if allowed to range the dog will
naturally go on point when finding the quarry and allow you to move into position before you give the command to flush.Any
persons wishing to watch my dogs work are more than welcome all you need do is ring me and it can be arranged, in the season
our dogs work on Pheasant shoots during the week and at the weekends out Wildfowling. In the summer months Pigeon and
Rabbit shooting with a bit of training thrown in are the norm.
The Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla at Work
We use our dogs on a range of game but mostly to Pheasant and Partridge due to our location within the British Isles, however
we do know of other breeders in the north of England that work their wires on Grouse ect and are very successful.Wires make
good peg dogs but i feel that being a dog with so many qualities he would be unjustly wasted totaly used just for this one task
but on occasions we have used our dogs on the peg without any problems.
Dogging in is a large part of our dogs work and i find the breed ideal for this, they have extreme levels of energy wich is needed to
complete a full days toil on the shoot we are working for, with 18,000 birds spread over a vast acreage the work gets very hard
going and the breed copes with it very nicely.
Walked up shooting is were the breed excels, they are steady and methodical when quatering and are a pleasure to watch
especially when they go on a good strong point, when two dogs are working together it is not unusual for one dog to back the
other on a point all is needed then is to move into position and give the command to flush and the rest is up to you.
Traditional walked up Partridges over stubble is another discipline wires can more than cope with and again very enjoyable
and leisurely way of shooting.
Although i love the breed in an all round capacity i think it i would be wrong in saying he excels in all the working disciplines
after all i think you would be hard pushed to beat a lab for picking up or a springer for working in cover, but if your looking for
an all-rounder he is what he says he is, he will Hunt, Point and Retrieve all to a very high standard.
Game
Wildfowling is my passion i have shot on the Romney Marsh for the last thirty-five years and hope to for the next thirty-five
who knows,i was a bit apprehensive when i first introduced this breed to wildfowling on the marsh although its inland it can
still be very cold and inhospitable at the best of times but my fears were unfounded and they cope very well, i have not seen
them up to their shoulders in mud and snow on the Solway Firth during an easterly gale so i cant remark but as for inland
fowling they give me no problems.Wires are fantastic swimmers and they love it, going to water whenever you want them to
and in most cases when you dont.My wildfowling covers a large array of species from Snipe to Canada Geese shot on ponds,
reservoirs and flooded areas and have not come across any problems with blind retrieves or at flight time as yet.
Wires working in sub-zero temps in Finland showing how hardy they can be ,the nearest dog is Zoldmali Jeles, Josags sister, i
spoke to the owner of the dogs at the European cup in Hungary and these dogs work in temperature's of -20 almost daily in the
winter month's.
Wildfowling
I dont rough shoot as much nowerdays as i used to, partly because of the way farmers farm locally, there dont seem to be the
rough areas or fields any more so finding a place to dog out a few rabbits is now quite hard but for any person who has any areas
of set-a-side or heathland this is the ideal breed using the basic hunt and point attributes wires can give you plenty of action.
Rough Shooting
The Wire can cope with all aspects of shooting but i would be nieve or foolish to say hes the best at all of them!!!!!!!!
Field Trialing
Trialing is something i have not previously been interested in but having seen a few in Hungary i have some what changed my
mind and am now entering a few in Hungary and Holland, their are some excellent pointing test on grouse in the north of England
and there are numerous working tests up and down the country so the opportunity to test or trial is open to any one prepared to
do a bit of leg work. The continental trials are quite different from ours so its worth while doing some research before you enter
into a trial abroad. In Britain it is worth remembering that only two Vizsla's have ever won the status of FTch and neither of these
were Wire's so anyone wanting a challange it's certainly there!!!
The 2008 Hungarian Derby And European Cup Hungary
The 2008 Hungarian Derby and European Cup staged in Cegled Hungary, with 7 nations competing and a large number of FTch
involved i thought myself and Iram may well be out of our league, but Iram worked hard and came up trumps again scoring 16
out of 20 and earning himself 4th place in the Derby with a final grading of "Excellent".He was only 3 points behind the winner
and i feel i probably cost him the difference with my inexsperience in trialing. He had two very good runs with good steady points
great flushes and a good drop to shot but but i think his retrive was second to none, this was a massive learning curve for me but
its another step forward in making Iram a duel Champion. We return to Hungary in the spring to compete in a field / water trial,
he needs to score 75% of the total points to go towards his Hungarian & International Champion titles we will be working towards
over the next 18 months.
The opening ceremony of European cup and Derby
The Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla is to my mind the perfect falconers dog they are very steady around the hawk, diligent at
work and staunch on the point giving the hawk or falcon every chance on the flush. After flushing i have never had any running
in problems even with ground game, the breed seem to learn that its not part of the game very quickly and just run to heal if my
gos is successful.
While the hawk is on the kill the breed some how naturaly dosn't encroach on the bird which i find quite amazing in fact they
are more intrested in carrying on hunting, the belief that because they are a retriever that they will try to retrieve your bird or
quarry is a myth, i regularly pick up on a pheasant shoot one day with Herb and the next were out flying my gos with no
problems.
Falconry The Ancient and Noble Art
Falconry is unlike any other sport, it demands great dexterity and many different skills. The novice falconer must learn
fieldcraft, leathercraft and husbandry, to name but a few. These have to be accompanied by knowledge of game and the
countryside.Training hawks for falconry also needs patience, sensitivity and a hard-to-define instinctive ability- the hallmark
of a good falconer. There are keepers of hawks and people that keep hawks the latter are definitely not falconers. There are
probably more falconers and austringers now than there has ever been and with the introduction of this breed it now give's us
an added choice over the traditional breeds used in our sport.
Dogs have worked in falconry for many hundreds of years, with many breeds used for all aspects of the sport few excel in all of
them. The Hungarian Wirehair is in a small minority that can!! wether it be pointing on a grouse moor for longwings or dogging
out bramble for short or broad wings this breed can cope admirably. On our last litter of seven, four went to falconers all are doing
very well as trainees and are currently working with their owners Falcons or Hawks respectfully.
Berces uses a number of dogs for falconry and are all Hungarian Wires one of his bitch's is the mother to our Dia,we were keen to
purchase a bitch from one of Berces dogs as they are all very very good falconry dogs. All Berces dogs are from very good
working stock and we are very pleased with Dia's progress.
Berces is a very keen falconer and Gos breeder,he breeds siberian Goshawks using AI methods and is very successfull with his
breeding project, you can find him at

myself with Finn a Pure
Finnish Goshawk
We had a great time hunting with Finn our pure Finnish Goshawk this year with his hunting weight slightly increasing to 1lbs 11
1/2ozs he faired well, his total bag for the 07/08 season grossed 67 head including rabbits, pheasants, partridge, magpies and one
woodpigeon. In 2008 Finn was retired from hunting and put into our breeding programme.
Finn produced two females this year,he fertilized all four eggs with one dying in the egg and the other as a day old,his mate was a
wild disabled German i was very pleased with this season as Finn is only three and this was his first attempt at breeding, My
other pair who are pure Finnish faired even better!! they produced four out of four, 3 males and a female, its pleasing how light a
female and one of the males turned out.
Our Goss breeding programme
Finn's younster now in the south of

Oz helping Imprinting a male Goshawk
Andy a professional falconer is also my
partner and ade in the breeding programme,
he's a great asset to have allowing me to draw
on his huge knowlage of birds of pray and his
practical experience with them. Andy
knowlage in husbandry has made a vast
differance this year and our production has
improved considerably.
The two female's Finn produced,i was very pleased with the size of the youngsters for 50/50
Finnish x German they turned out very nice !!! with them flying at 2lb 4 oz i think you get
good value for money and with the female being wild disabled it gives you a good wild blood
line that you know has'nt been interfered with.
We are now taking orders from this pair as we are with our other two pairs of pure Finnish
Goshawks please don't hesatate to contact us if you are interested.
We are also taking orders for our 5/8 Gyr x Sakers they bred five youngsters last year and
were all very nice.A great pair bred by Nick Fox we hope to have the same success this year.

One of our 50/50 Gosses
Josag with Mallard
We do hatch out our "Extra Eggs" but they are returned to the parents after two days unless they are required for Imprinting
With most of our pairs we like to keep the male in to help with the rearing, it's our policy to totally parent rear and do not interfere
with the natural cycle of breeding at all. After ringing the male is removed as the females become aggressive towards them.
We do take a few orders for Imprinting
Yosag likes the look of this young male
We aim to produce top Quality
goshawks using top quality birds,
all of our birds come directly from
Don Mosley lines and are proven
hunters.
Our 5/8 Gyr x Sakers only produced one young female this year
